The Plot in Brief

The plot of Voodoo Gold is fairly straightforward, and based on the idea that there is a secret realm which is full of riches but which most people will never be able to experience because it is hidden from normal human perception. The only way to enter this secret realm is to participate in an ancient Voodoo ritual, and that is something that requires a significant amount of bravery as well as the opportunity and know-how.

Enter Kane, who is quite aware of the legend and has the courage to do whatever it takes to experience the secret realm for himself. Kane travels through the mangrove swamps of Louisiana to the hideout of a shaman, and there he participates in the ritual required to achieve success. His spiritual eyes are opened and where he had previously seen nothing, he now sees gold – the legendary Voodoo Gold.

Darkly Atmospheric

Voodoo Gold is the third game in the hugely popular Gold series of titles from ELK Studios, but is much darker than either of its predecessors, Tahiti Gold or Ecuador Gold. Here the action takes place in the mangrove swamp which Kane must travel through in order to reach the shaman’s hideout, so the background portrays a green-hued forest with mist rising eerily from the stagnant ground.

Both graphics and audio are superb in this game, and the designers have done a great job of portraying a wonderfully menacing setting. The soundtrack has a hypnotically rhythmic voodoo beat which pulls you into the experience, and the special sound effects that accompany the gaming action blend in perfectly. Turn up the volume to better appreciate this side of things, or plug in headphones for an even more immersive experience.

Format and Gameplay

The symbols that are used in Voodoo Gold include a green crucifix, a blue star, a yellow ram’s head, a red heart, a bottle of poison, a chicken’s foot, a pair of magickal dice, a top hat, a skull, three characters, including the shaman and Kane, a Bonus symbol and a Voodoo Wild.

This game has six reels, which are presented between two trees that are studded with human skulls. There are always at least four rows in play, giving you 4,096 ways to win. However, whenever you create a winning combination of symbols, the winning symbols will explode, creating space which allows additional symbols to drop in from above. Every time this type of avalanche occurs, an additional row is created, with a maximum of eight rows being achievable. A full eight rows will give you 262,144 ways to win, which really gets the adrenaline pumping.

Symbol Drops and Bombs

During a symbol drop, symbols may appear bigger than usual, with sizes of 2x2, 3x3 and 4x4 all in play. Should one of these big symbols drop into the reels, any empty spaces which are left underneath them will be filled with Voodoo Wild symbols. In addition, big symbols activate when they reach the bottom of the screen, giving you more wins to anticipate.

If a single Bonus symbol drops into the game, it will transform into a Bomb and then explode, taking with it all of the symbols in the immediate vicinity. If two Bonus symbols drop, they will be transformed into Dual Bombs. These will also explode, but instead of just destroying symbols in the immediate vicinity, they will also take out the symbols in a straight line between the two, as well as all identical symbols that are anywhere else on the reels. This can create some massive spaces for new symbols to drop in from above.

Avalanche Free Drops Feature

Get three or more Bonus symbols on the reels and you will trigger an Avalanche Free Drops feature. This will give you at least six free drops, and any Voodoo Wild symbols which don’t help you to win straight away will stick for the remaining free drops.
