There has been a recent spate of slot releases set in ancient Egypt, but none are quite like Doom of Egypt from Play’n GO. The company chose not to release a seasonal Halloween title this year in order to focus on the release of its Honey Rush and Doom of Egypt games instead, and whilst that decision to break with tradition surprised many, we can now understand why they made it. Honey Rush, which we have previously reviewed, was as sweet as its name suggests, and Doom of Egypt is a gorgeous-looking slot which plays like a dream.
Set Aside Your Expectations
We know what you’re thinking: ‘Another slot set in Egypt… That means the usual sandy colour scheme and a daring character to side with as he or she sets out to raid some tombs, right?’ Wrong! That’s what we thought, too, but you can set aside such expectations because Doom of Egypt looks quite different from many of the other Egyptian-themed slots that you’ve seen before. That said, it does draw heavily on the style of previous successful titles such as Rise of Dead, so if you have already played that title the visuals here might not be quite as surprising as they undoubtedly will be for others.
This game has five reels and ten pay lines, and takes place against a beautifully rendered background which has a rather mystical blue tinge to it. The five reels have hieroglyphic backgrounds, and symbols include ornate versions of the playing card ranks of 10, J, Q, K and A, three ancient Egyptian kings in undead form, the deity Anubis and a scarab beetle, which serves as both a wild and a scatter.
All of the imagery in this game look very authentic, and that really helps to pull you into the world it portrays. A haunting soundtrack plays throughout, helping to make things even more immersive, and the sound effects that accompany in-game events and features contrast quite nicely against the main theme.
Free Spins Feature
Get three or more scarab beetles on the reels at the same time and you will trigger a Free Spins feature. This will award you ten free spins, and in this part of the game one symbol will be randomly selected to serve as an Expanding Symbol. When this symbol appears during the subsequent free spins, it will expand to fil the entire reel whenever doing so can give you a shot at landing a decent win.
On the Halloween Issue
Speaking about the decision to skip a Halloween-specific game this year, Johan Törnqvist, who is CEO at Play’n GO, said: ‘Honey Rush and Doom of Egypt are two great games that we knew the market would react to. Rather than rushing out a game at this time of year for the quick holiday win, we’re putting more durable, longer-lasting titles out into the market that will do just as well and have a longer shelf life.
‘There’s a place for themed games and always will be, but we’re not going to force it. If we come up with a great game for the holiday, we’ll put it out, but we have plenty of titles that everyone will love no matter what time of year!’
