Swedish game development company Thunderkick has released some great games since its launch in 2012, and in the last few months alone players have been treated to a slew of new titles, including Raven’s Eye, Dragon Horn and Midas Golden Touch. Now there is another Thunderkick release landing at participating venues, and this time you won’t be able to keep your feet on the ground because the action in Riders of the Storm takes place in the stormy skies above.
Storm Chasing – Steampunk Style
Riders of the Storm is based on the adventures of a group of steampunk storm chasers. Whilst modern storm chasers tend to drive around in their SUV’s in search of twisters, hurricanes and the like, the extreme hobbyists in this game have built an airship which allows them to get close to the devastating power of nature at high altitude. And when we say airship, we aren’t referring to your regular Goodyear blimp. Instead, we’re talking about an old-fashioned sailing ship which would normally be expected to traverse oceans rather than swelling black clouds, so there are plenty of sailing-relating symbols on the reels, albeit with a distinctly steampunk flavour.
The game itself has five reels and three rows, and will give you 243 ways to win a prize with every spin. The action takes place against a foreboding backdrop of dark storm clouds, and the symbols used include the steampunk-style playing card ranks of 9, 10, J, Q, K and A, a hook, anchor, ship’s navigation wheel, the three storm chasers, a crystal wild and a compass scatter.
Although the imagery in Riders of the Storm has a comic-book style, the soundtrack has a more serious feel, and that combination works very well to give players the sense that they are embarking on an epic adventure. Sound effects include rolls of thunder, lightning strikes and mechanistic samples that serve to enhance the steampunk aspect as much as they highlight the action on screen.
Mystery Wild Reels
A Mystery Wild Reels feature can be triggered at any time as you are playing the main game, and when that happens up to four of the reels will be turned into wild reels. This can be extremely useful in helping you to land winning combinations, and the fact that it can happen at any point gives each spin an added element of excitement and anticipation.
Four Different Bonus Games
Riders of the Storm has four different bonus games. The Bonus Game feature is triggered by getting three or more of the compass scatters on the reels, and when that has been achieved you will be asked to choose one of the four games, the details of which are as follows:
Low Volatility will have the third-highest character symbol stacked on the reels and award you 15 free spins with a wild multiplier value of 2x
Medium Volatility will stack the second-highest character symbol on the reels and award you 10 free spins with a wild multiplier of 3x
High Volatility will have the highest-value character symbol stacked on the reels and give you 6 free spins with a wild multiplier of 5x
Random Volatility will stack one randomly selected symbol on the reels and give you a random number of free spins with a random wild multiplier
All wild symbols that appear in a bonus game round will trigger a Walking Wild Respin feature. This will cause the wild symbols to ‘walk’ one space across the reels with every respin until they disappear from view.
Should you get three or more compass scatter symbols on the reels during your chosen free spins round, you will receive additional free spins. It is possible to retrigger the feature three times, so there is plenty of scope for a lengthy bonus game session.
