The Great Chicken Escape is a new slot from Pragmatic Play which is sure to put a smile on your beak. Inspired by the true story of a group of allied soldiers who escaped from a seemingly ‘inescapable’ prisoner of war camp in World War II, a bunch of farmyard chickens have decided that they can have a go at doing something similar. The conditions here aren’t anywhere near as bad as those that the WW2 heroes had to endure, but nobody likes being cooped up all of the time, and the chickens are keen to taste freedom.A Game of Two Levels
The Great Chicken Escape is one of those games that can be played on two levels. On one level, it’s a humorous slot which literally anyone can select and start playing for a thoroughly enjoyable time. On another level, however, it is a beautifully detailed tribute to The Great Escape movie which was released in 1963 and told the story of the allied soldiers mentioned a few moments ago.If you have seen The Great Escape starring Steve McQueen, James Garner and Charles Bronson – to name just three of the big names of the time – then you will enjoy The Great Chicken Escape even more than you would otherwise. That’s because there are several key moments in the movie which are replicated here, but with chickens playing the roles instead of Hollywood actors. We won’t focus on those moments in this review, because you may not have seen the movie, but do look out for them if you are familiar with the big screen portrayal of the story.
Prepare to Escape!
This game has five reels, three rows and twenty pay lines, and takes place in the farmyard which currently serves as what the chickens perceive to be a prison. The cartoon-style background is suitably oppressive-looking, albeit in a rather humorous way, with ramshackle chicken coops, chicken wire fencing and a tantalising blue sky beckoning the imprisoned birds to dream of a better life.Symbols used on the reels include the playing card ranks of J, Q, K and A, four chicken characters wearing different hats, The Great Chicken Escape logo, a chicken Wild and a Bonus scatter. The game soundtrack is very reminiscent of the one used in the 1963 movie, and sets the scene well, with a good handful of chicken-themed sound effects thrown in for good measure.
Random Spin Features

The Great Chicken Escape slot boasts a couple of random spin features which, as you have probably guessed, are triggered at random as you play. The features that can be triggered are Guard Dog Wilds and Chicken Run Wilds
- Guard Dog Wilds are special wild symbols that serve the same purpose as regular wilds, but look somewhat different. When this feature is activated, anything from four to nine of these symbols will be added to the reels, making it easier for you to achieve a win
- Chicken Run Wilds are fully stacked wilds which resemble the wartime Your Country Needs You posters, but with a chicken instead of Lord Kitchener or Uncle Sam. When this feature is triggered, two, three or four reels will be transformed into these stacked wilds
- The Secret Tunnel Bonus gives you a choice of three chests. Choose one and you will get a random prize, an order to collect or a mystery tunnel. The latter possibility will allow you to take one of four tunnels to access one of the other four bonus features
- The Poultry in Motion game allows you to explore a route of 22 points by selecting golden eggs to proceed along the route. You can collect at any time, or try to go the whole way and reach the Big Money Bonus feature
- Get Clucky Free Spins gives you 10 free spins with a special Wild symbol in play
- To the Other Side gives you 9 free spins plus 1 special free spin. Special Wild symbols are collected as you play the first 9 spins, and then they are all placed on the reels for the special 10th spin.
